On Nov. 24, AmEx and hundreds of partners across the U.S. will celebrate Small Business Saturday
by rallying shoppers all over the nation to visit local businesses on the Saturday between Black Friday and Cyber Monday - the biggest shopping weekend of the year! For three years now, this successful initiative has been calling upon people to shop locally, and in the process has raised awareness of the important contributions that small businesses make to our economy and society, such as accounting for 54 percent of all sales in the U.S.
and often serving as the life blood of our communities.
At Verisign, we are proud to show our support for small businesses by promoting Small Business Saturday to our customers and by providing services and resources to help power the online presence that many of these companies rely on for raising awareness, reaching new customers, and building the community. The importance of being online for small businesses has never been greater. According to a recent survey
conducted by SearchEngineLand.com, 85 percent of consumers used the Internet to find local businesses in the past 12 months, while one in six consumers use the Internet every week to find local businesses. This data shows a clear advantage for those small businesses with an online presence -- they not only have a higher chance of being found by customers, but can also leverage their website and/or social sites to more cost effectively offer promotions and discounts.
For years .com has been important for businesses seeking to establish their online presence, for its global recognition and consistent record of security, availability, and stability. Verisign manages the critical infrastructure that powers .com and is honored that so many of the estimated 23 million small businesses in America
have entrusted us to get their customers to their Web sites and online presence. For businesses seeking to gain the many benefits of an online presence, Verisign offers information through GetA.com
and our Small Business Resource Center
, including case studies, videos, and tips that illustrate how small businesses can create and promote their Web presence. There are also tools that make it easy to search for and find a registrar to purchase .com and .net domain names.
With increasing competition, small businesses need every advantage to stay front of mind for customers. Programs like Small Business Saturday help to remind shoppers how convenient and important it is to support small businesses and shop locally. But it is up to the businesses to maintain that interest year round, and building an online presence is one of the most effective ways of doing that.
