Today, Verisign released the latest issue of the Domain Name Industry Brief, which showed that the Internet grew by more than six million domain names in the fourth quarter of 2012. The total number of registered domain names now stands at more than 252 million, which represents a 2.5 percent growth rate over the third quarter of 2012. This marks the eighth straight quarter with greater than 2 percent growth.
As shown in the chart below, the order of the top TLDs in terms of zone size changed slightly when compared to the third quarter. In Q4’2012, the largest TLDs in terms of base size were, in order: .com, .de (Germany), .net, .tk (Tokelau), .uk (United Kingdom), .org, .cn (China), .info,.nl (Netherlands) and .ru (Russian Federation).*

The total number of registered domain names now stands at more than 246 million, which represents a 2.4 percent growth rate over Q2’2012. This marks the seventh straight quarter with greater than 2 percent growth.
As shown in the chart below, the order of the top TLDs in terms of zone size changed slightly when compared to the second quarter. In Q3’2012, the largest TLDs in terms of base size were, in order: .com, .de (Germany), .net, .tk (Tokelau), .uk (United Kingdom), .org, .info, .cn (China), .nl (Netherlands) and .ru (Russian Federation).*

Every quarter, Verisign shares Internet growth data with the industry in the form of our Domain Name Industry Brief. Today we released the data from the fourth quarter of 2011 that showed the Internet continued to grow to more than 225 million domains names, up nearly 6 million from the third quarter of 2011, an increase of 5.9 million domain names (click on the chart to the left for more detail). That’s significant growth!
